3 ways to scale an ecom brand

There are really 3 ways to scale your ecom brand - doing it yourself, building an in-house team or hiring an agency.

Today I want to tell you what might be best for you based on my experience of working with 50+ ecom brands.

The 3 ways are:

  1. Doing everything yourself.

  2. Building an in-house team.

  3. Hiring an agency.

Let’s start with the first and most obvious one - being a one-man army.

This is probably the best approach when you’re starting out. This might be an unpopular opinion but I believe that you should learn to do everything yourself at an at least good level before outsourcing.

The problem with you doing everything is that if you want to scale to hit some real numbers (like 7, 8 and 9-figures), you can’t do it alone.

Mostly because you don’t have time to manage everything but you also probably don’t know what to do cause you lack the top-level experience and expertise.

That’s where the 2 other solutions come in.

Building an in-house team seems to be the right choice at the first glance. In the end, they’ll be working only on your brand and will be fully dedicated to scaling it, right?

Technically yes but the truth is that usually these people will either end up building their own business after learning from you or just won’t be good enough to be A-talent and top performers.

I mean they might be but then they’ll be insanely expensive (like $150-$200k per year for 1 person).

And then there’s the last - agency.

For a fraction of a full-time person, you get the whole team to handle a certain area that you’re outsourcing - e.g. in our case it’s 4 people working on your account (copywriter, designer, Klaviyo tech and a strategist + me overseeing everything).

The biggest pro tho is that agencies usually have insights into other businesses and they know what currently works.

Whenever I see something that crushes for one of our clients, I immediately plan it for others and see if and how we can do it for them as well.

This way all the brands we work with have up-to-date strategies that are actually proven to work so we remove the guesswork.

There’s one con which is finding the right agency. Cheap ones will burn you out so don’t even bother looking at Fiverr or UpWork unless you want a templated copy & paste approach that other brands are using (and have literally the same copy and design as others).

I know it’s a tough one but I hope I cleared things a bit.

Cheers,

Konrad
